I’ve never classified myself as a “dog person” or a “cat person”. In all actuality, I’m a people person through and through. Now, before you going all puff the magic dragon on me and smoke starts coming out your ears because I don’t think your little Fido is the best thing to ever draw breath…relax; I like pets. The problem is that I don’t like poop. Or the cost of pet food. Or that wet-dog smell. Or having to cut brunch short because I’m thinking of adorable puppy eyes trapped in a crate. Or being woken up by bad breath and a glaring reminder that I really, really should exercise. However, I certainly love pets that aren’t my own – and I admire the heck out of people who willingly give up wine money for vet visits. There are plenty of pet people sprinkled throughout the DC area, and if you happen to be one of those selfless, lucky ones with a dog at the end of your leash, I’ve rounded up some of the best places in the city to spoil them doggone rotten:
There is no shortage of places in the city for your dog to let loose and have some good, old-fashioned dog fun.
S Street Dog Park: This puppy-friendly place is located on S St at 17th St NW. Here you will find an enclosed area for dogs to run free, turf that keeps the atmosphere clean, a public water fountain and strategically positioned benches where you can relax, take it all in, and not risk sunburn.
Shaw Dog Park: This place tailored for pooches sits at 1651 11th St NW, between Q St and R St. A double gate keeps even the sneakiest of dogs safely enclosed. Also, lots of bags, water bowls, trees, and benches make for a pleasant experience for all parties.
Langdon Dog Park: This dog-zone is located on 291 20th Street NE, between N. Franklin and N. Hamlin St. It has all the amenities such as water fountains, bags, and plenty of trashcans so there is little excuse for messes. Also, there are separate areas for big and small dogs, meaning you won’t have to worry about your dog being bullied (or bullying).
Did you know that dogs can be fashionable? And that posh dog living really should include an expensive, plush bed? Or that most dogs get to experience the “spa’ more frequently than I do. A ruff life indeed…
Howl to the Chief: This doggy boutique won the Washington City Paper’s Reader’s Choice Award for best pet shop in 2013, 2014, 2015…so they have to have something to offer. In all actually, ‘something’ is an understatement…they have everything. They offer all of the pet-store basics in addition to a self-service dog wash, grooming services, and free delivery within 5 miles.
Doggy Style Bakery, Boutique, and Pet Spa: This place also has its fair share of accolades – it was voted one of DC’s best pet shops by Washingtonian Magazine and has been seen on NBC and The Today Show. They have pet beds, treats, a doggy spa, and even birthday cakes for pet milestones. Yep, they deliver too…
Okay, exercising in nice parks and enjoying lavish dog spas is nice, but let’s be honest – no matter the size, breed, or personality of the pup, they are all looking for one thing: More. Treats. And who could blame them? I’ve rounded up some of the places that have equally delicious treats for pet and owner.
Okay, so Fido doesn’t get a treat unless you do too, am I right? After all, it’s only fair. Here they have stuff like espresso cream cheese brownies, brown sugar shortbread, and ginger lemon buttercream cookie sandwiches for you and equally scrumptious all-natural dog treats for your furry friend, baked in four flavors: bacon & cheese, bbq kitty riblets, chicken & cheese, and PB crunch.
Etto features delicious seasonally inspired pizzas for those of us on two legs and also occasionally features a special for four four-legged friend: a prosciutto bone. This is a massive leg bone filled with chewy bits of salty ham. It’s like the filet mignon of dog treats.
If you’re having a bad day, what is the answer? Cupcakes. If your dog is having a bad day – be it because they got nurtured, are rocking a silly haircut or realized that furniture is off-limits, what is the answer? Cupcakes! Seriously though…with a name like Sprinkles, do you even have to ask why? Your only question should be ‘when?’ They have rotating flavors like chocolate marshmallow, banana peanut butter, green tea, and Cuban coffee for owners and a special sugar-free cupcake with yogurt “frosting” for pups!
