Whitney Brimfield is the founder of Spark Point Fundraising. With over 18 years of experience in fundraising, business development and social enterprise, she works to help organizations develop the most effective strategies to connect with and engage investors. Find out what she loves (and loathes) most about living in the city:
What’s a typical day for you?
One of the things I love best about my work is that no day is typical. In any given day I could be meeting with a nonprofit executive to talk about their mission and how they want to build their organization’s revenue, networking with other entrepreneurs, or hunkering down at a coffee shop (Bakehouse at 14th and T is my fave) to get some work done.
What or who is your biggest influence?
Women who are trailblazers inspire me. Two that I think about often are 1) my grandmother, Dorothy Becker, who was a high level corporate executive before second wave feminism and the glass ceiling were even a thing; and 2) Diane von Furstenberg, who built a brand around being independent and effortlessly stylish. She overcame a lot of hardship in her life to get where she is and I admire her commitment to helping women from all walks of life succeed.
What neighborhood do you live in?
I live on the East side of Dupont Circle, close to 16th street.
What is your biggest DC pet peeve?
TOURISTS. I know they are important to our economy and everyone should feel at home in our Nation’s Capital, but I often find myself stuck behind them on the sidewalk or in the metro and it’s hard to be patient with them while they figure out the system. Stand right, walk left people!
Favorite song of all time?
I have to pick just one?!! Come Pick Me Up by Ryan Adams is one. A good friend of mine once told me that it reminded him of me and I fell in love with the song. Another is Mt. Pleasant by Tuscadero. I love all things local and Tuscadero came into being during the heydey of the 90s music scene in DC. Also, the song perfectly encompasses what Mt. Pleasant was and still is.
Favorite DC haunt?
This is a tough one. There are so many to choose from! Maketto is an
awesome space that is a hybrid of retail, coffee shop, and bar. A great addition to the H Street corridor.
What’s your favorite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon?
Definitely brunch with my girlfriends. It doesn’t happen enough.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
If you couldn’t be a…, what would you be?
I love being an entrepreneur. I wouldn’t trade that for anything … unless professional luxury traveler is a thing.
Top three favorite movies?
Jaws; The Untouchables; and a tie between The Usual Suspects and A Few Good Men
Name five people, alive or dead, you’d love to invite to a dinner party
Most embarrassing moment?
Not for public consumption ;-)
What was your major in college, and do you use it today?
My major was Biology with a minor in Feminist and Gender Studies. I don’t use much biology, but I think about feminism every day.
Who do you think is the most attractive person to ever live?
Name one thing most people don’t know about you.
I’m an introvert.
