Winter’s Remedy for Cabin Fever: Ice Rinks

When I looked out the window this morning at the cold, gray sky, I noticed water frozen on the spindly tops of oak trees. Small figures on the sidewalk passed in bundles of fabric and upturned collars. It’s wintry. Feel like huddling inside on Friday night and getting in bed recluse-early? Do it, honey. Want to warm your belly with whiskey on Tuesday night? I’m not gonna judge. But when you tire of the blanket lair, try this for winter spirit: lace up and glide across an ice rink like a winter sprite.

This could be you…

Ice-skating season is in full swing, and it’s coming to a location near you. That includes the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, a place that seems to have great outdoor events for every season.

The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink is located directly across the street from the west wing of the National Gallery of Art and transforms its massive fountain into an ice rink between November 14, 2014 and March 16, weather permitting.

Tickets cost $8 for adults and $7 for children, plus the cost of skates ($3). Don’t know how to skate? Don’t worry. They also have group and private lessons. Find out more about the Sculpture Garden Ice Rink by clicking here.

Then, once you’ve exhausted yourself in the cold, head inside the Gallery for current exhibitions, including a 400th anniversary celebration of El Greco, on display from November 2 to February 16; or permanent collections, including the prolific works of photographer Robert Frank. More information can be found here.

If you’d rather not go to the National Mall, there are three other ice-skating rinks in DC, and several more in Maryland and Virginia. Here’s a comprehensive list:
